Happy Pongal Wishes

I got this text message from my brother today, that I wanted to share. It is a collection of Tamil wishes which fits any occasion.

ஒலி பிறக்கட்டும்               —>  Let light be born
இருள் விலகட்டும்              —>  Let darkness be removed
அருள் கிடைக்கட்டும்       —>  Let blessings be given
பொருள் பெருகட்டும்        —>  Let prosperity grow
புகழ் பரவட்டும்                   —>  Let greatness spread
நலம் வளரட்டும்                  —>  Let good health prosper

My favorite Pongal memories growing up:

1. Eating sweet pongal made with Rice and Jaggery – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaggery
2. Eating sweet Sugar Canes
3. Receiving gifts from my grand parents
4. Watching colorful ornate bullocks running wild – akin to Bull running in spain but in a smaller fashion.
5. Feeding the crows. We fed them first prior to eating.
6. Salutations to Sun during mid-day with freshly prepared pongal, again prior to eating.
7. Watching my grandparents be happy. They loved all the festivals and really enjoyed celebrating them.
